How to Do Charity in the Caribbean: Don't Send Money, Bring Crayons
| Frommers.com
This article is a great tip for anyone traveling to the Caribbean, and anyone planning to visit me! I of course will be happy to give suggestions for needed items as you begin to pack and prepare for the visit.
During the 2010-2011 school year, I am teaching English at the Centro Buen Pastor School in Barrio de las Flores in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic. Follow this blog for updates and information about my trip!

Finalizing my plans!
As my 10 month trip to Dominican Republic approaches, I wanted to start my blog so that my friends and family can keep updated on my pre-trip preparations. I will try to keep this blog updated throughout my time in San Pedro, and let you all know what is going on and what I am up to while I'm there.
I will be moving to San Pedro on Sunday, August 22nd. For the first month and a half, I will be staying with Sister Jean Gabriel at her house. She is coming up to MA to visit in October, so at that time I will move into other accommodations (tbd).
I will be working at both of the Episcopal Schools in San Pedro. Centro Buen Pastor is the k-8 school associated with the church and clinic run by Sister Jean Gabriel and Sister Pricilla in the Barrio de las Flores. San Esteban is the k-12 school associated with the church and clinic of San Esteban, closer to the boardwalk area of San Pedro. The two schools are within reasonable walking distance of each other, so I may be going back and forth between the two, but nothing has been determined yet about my teaching schedule. I have many friends in both of the church communities from my past trips and I know I will be welcomed warmly!
My tentative schedule is to leave the 22 of August, return to the US for my college roommate's wedding in Vermont for 3 days at the end of September, return home for the Holiday break in December, and end my trip in the late spring when school ends (late may/early june). Other than that, I will be in Dominican Republic and would love visitors! I'm right near a few gorgeous resort areas, and will happily guide you in the right direction if you want to enjoy the beaches of Dominican Republic. Let me know!
For now, I am packing and preparing. I won't be able to bring too many supplies down in my luggage since I need my own supplies for living for the next 10 months, but I will take donations that are either very small (stickers, silly bandz, and other fun things for my classes) or monetary donations that I can use for my class and for the missions down there.
I am getting excited! Thank you all for supporting my trip and for your interest in my mission efforts!
